Lottery fever strikes

It didn't take Maria Strazemski long to name what she would buy if she wins the $330 million Mega Millions jackpot tonight.

"I'd buy my husband a Porsche, and share with my family," said Strazemski, 57, of the Richfield section of Clifton. "I'd travel to the Mediterranean and take a cooking class in Tuscany."

She did not feel that a jackpot could be too large, but felt that with a certain size jackpot, several people should win.

"Or, someone who is in need should definitely win," she added.

On Thursday, the New Jersey Lottery Commission and acting Executive Director William T. Jourdain were visiting a booth at Blaine Avenue on the Boardwalk to sell tickets for tonight's drawing and give advice to people buying tickets. The jackpot is $330 million for the annuity option paid over 26 years, and $194.4 million for cash.

Stroke survivor to run for dad with $10,000 fund-raising goal

SHIRLEY -- After surviving a stroke this summer, Frank Mastrangelo is continuing to train for a half-marathon at Disney World in Florida.

A fund-raiser sponsored by the American Stroke Association, the event's signature logo is, "The real finish line is an end to stroke."

Mastrangelo, 42, made plans to take part in the event -- slated for Jan. 13, 2008 -- after his father died of a stroke last year. He started training in March. Though he isn't sure doctors will clear it, he said the run is a go so far.

In addition to training, he's raising funds and has support from family, friends and colleagues. His goal is $10,000, of which he's raised about half. The money goes to research and stroke education.

Meanwhile, Mastrangelo has traded fast food for fruit and a perch on the living room couch for exercises on the road and at the gym.

Chefs get personal - and affordable

Nancy MacManus had so many food allergies, she didn't know what to cook.

Bill Mistler, a full-time student, wanted quick meals - but not takeout every night.

And Carol Kutteh, an over-booked wife and mother from Newtown Square, was looking for a less stressful way to get dinner on the table.

Each had a different motivation, but they all arrived at the same solution: a personal chef.

Once thought to be the exclusive purview of celebs and the uber-rich, personal chefs - hired to do all the menu planning, grocery shopping and cooking - are gradually becoming an option for the rest of us, says John Moore, director of the United States Personal Chef Association, which met at Loews Hotel last week.

About 225 of the Association's 2,000 members attended classes on cooking techniques, menu development, and running a business.
