Americans are getting fatter, says a recent study that shows waistlines expanding in 31 states, especially in the South. Residents of Mississippi, West Virginia and Alabama had the toughest time laying off the pork rinds, as they finished in the top three for percentage of overweight adults, according to the study by the a dvocacy group Trust for America�s Health. Mississippi, in fact, became the first state to crack the 30 percent mark for its obese adult population. Ten of the 15 states with the highest adult obesity rates were south of the Mason-Dixon line. Colorado, meanwhile, continued its reign as the nation�s leanest state with an obesity rate of 17.6 percent. New York and New Jersey ranked near the bottom of the obesity charts - 36th and 40th, respectively.
Racers hit Topeka for Quarter Midget Monza
Drivers came from all over the country in search of that oh-so-coveted checkered flag at the Topeka Midget Monza race this weekend. “We kind of struggled at the Grands a little bit and we needed some boosts for this year," said Light 160 winner Nick Barstad. Drivers Dillon Boggess and Jake Wright also received boosts on Sunday. “Felt pretty good that I got that last pass in to win it," said Senior Honda Winner Boggess. “Your heart just rises up and it just feels excellent," said Senior Stock Winner Wright. There's just one Monza left in the 2007 season; the Columbus Day Monza in San Antonio, Texas. .
Clarksburg adopted LeRoy Crump Jr. -- and his Cajun cooking
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. -- "This is Cajun Country," proclaims a sign outside the restaurant at 211 N. Fourth St. Cajun? In the Mountain State? In a city known for its Italian eateries? But inside there's no mistaking that at least this little piece of Clarksburg is Cajun -- the smell of spices, the Mardi Gras beads, the bottles of hot sauce, the jazz and New Orleans Saints posters. And, of course, the food -- po' boys and seafood gumbo, jambalaya and red beans and rice, crawfish corn chowder and fried catfish. And on and on. Chef LeRoy Crump Jr., opened his authentic restaurant on March 1, christening it Lagniappe (LAN-yap), a word derived from American Spanish with Louisiana French influences that means an extra or unexpected gift.
