Caesar Rodney begins new public comment policy

The Caesar Rodney School district implemented a new policy for public comment at its Aug. 21 board meeting that does not allow the public to bring up personnel matters to board members.

Board members reasoned that because they are the final arbiter when it comes to personnel issues, including disciplinary actions, there could be a perception they might prejudge a case if it is brought up in a public forum.

"It’s something we learned from last meeting when comments were made that probably weren’t appropriate for the board to hear," said district Superintendent Dr. Kevin A. Fitzgerald, referring to comments parents made about a teacher who allegedly helped students on the Delaware Student Testing Program or DSTP.

Anyone wishing to bring up a possible personnel issue should contact either himself or district Director of Human Resources David Perrington, Fitzgerald said.

Teacher gathers supplies for kids

PATERSON -- The sidewalks surrounding School 10 on Mercer Street are littered with discarded tires and lined with burned buildings. But it's the situation inside School 10 that troubles George Abaunza more.

Three years ago, when Abaunza tutored children there, many had no notebooks, pens or pencils. He decided to change that.

Since 2005, Abaunza has been collecting school supplies and backpacks from his colleagues at Felician College in Lodi to assist needy school-bound children in Passaic County.

As a child growing up in Nicaragua, Abaunza lived in a wealthy household in Managua with maids, gardeners and a chauffeur. He says he was surprised when he visited a poor area of the city and realized that the dirt road outside a dilapidated home was the same as the dirt floor inside.

Klema is from within the district and brings several years of experience preparing meals for students and staff. Within the first few days on the job, her fine culinary skills were favorably remarked upon by students and staff.

Student was excited about football

Ladon Henry Lerma-Shiver was excited about his first year in high school. He started the school year wanting to be on the Jordan Vocational High School football team.

But head coach Tony Graziano said Tuesday that, "Physically, he was not ready to get on the football field. We decided it would be a good idea for him to be a manager for the team. He did an outstanding job for the time he was out there with us."

On Friday night, his father, Ronnie Shiver, found the 14-year-old dead sometime after 9 p.m., still wrapped in a sheet where he had been watching TV in a living room chair in the family home. He was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital.

Graziano said he learned about the student's death Monday.

"It was a real shock," he said. "He wanted to be part of the team, part of something positive."

Not only will the team wear stickers on their helmets as a memorial to him, but Graziano said he plans to take the team to the funeral, wearing their white jerseys.
