Agencies helping foster kids

Alnesha Williams remembers feeling left out a few years ago when her classmates at Lively Technical Center talked about the cars their parents had gotten them.

Williams, who had just left the foster care system, had other things on her mind: how to pay for her medical assistance certification, how to keep a roof over her head, how to learn the life skills that her schoolmates took for granted.

Entree into the kitchen

The question is a hot topic in certain food circles: Why are outsiders being hired to open certain top-drawer Washington restaurants? Isn't the reputation or education of home-grown talent good enough?

Celebrity chefs Eric Ripert and Wolfgang Puck are scheduled to head up two first-class eateries in the District next year, following others who have come to the region from other large cities.

It's not the quality of local cooking schools that is in question, suggest District chefs Jeff Tunks of Passion Food Hospitality, a restaurant group that includes Ceiba, DC Coast and TenPehn, and Vikram Garg of Indebleu, but the high stakes of being successful in an extremely competitive field where problems include keeping young chefs who often think moving from job to job builds a more impressive resume.

Film Clips

ARCTIC TALE (G). "March of the Penguins" meets "An Inconvenient Truth" in this kids' doc from the folks at National Geographic.

BALLS OF FURY (PG-13). Satire of "Enter the Dragon" not too good but funny now and then (1:30). HH1/2 (Strauss, Los Angeles Daily News — 8/30)

BECOMING JANE (PG). Pleasant-enough remake of "Pride and Prejudice," subbing Jane Austen (Anne Hathaway) for her literary creation Elizabeth Bennett (1:52). HHH (Whipp, Los Angeles Daily News — 8/17)

DEATH SENTENCE (R). Kevin Bacon goes Charles Bronson when his oldest son is killed in a gang initiation.

HAIRSPRAY (PG). The world probably didn't need another film version of John Waters' 1988 romp any more than it needed a Broadway musical version of it. Having said that, this new brand of "Hairspray" is enormously entertaining but with only a touch of Waters' signature dark, kitschy humor.
