PROBLEMS AND PET PEEVES

The place was an Italian restaurant in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., and the time was summer, a hot, muggy, buggy summer in my college years. I had three months to kill in a strange, unwelcoming environment, and I missed my school friends in upstate New York and my ole Jersey home. So I waitressed six nights a week, came in early to help with prep and counted the days till I flew back north.

The restaurant's owners originally were from New Jersey, as it turned out, and the food was the same circa-1970s-in-Jersey Italian food I knew from back home. I thought I'd been a good waitress organized, efficient, accommodating in my previous school-days' stints, but by Day Three, I'd ticked off the hostess who ran the floor show.

She was a big-haired blonde named Karen who, as she told everyone, was just touching down in Jax for a brief spell.

Beverley tops value poll

Householders searching for the best possible lifestyle at the best possible price should move to Beverley.

The schools, restaurants and property prices put the Yorkshire town top of the Royal Bank of Scotland's "affordable affluence" survey. Maidstone in Kent came second while Chester was third.

The survey considered positive "lifestyle indicators" in each town and the prices charged for them. These included upmarket restaurants, bars, museums, galleries, gyms, top-performing state schools and motor dealerships.

Lancaster Headliners: Finalists are chosen

The results are in, and the top 12 Lancaster Headliners finalists have been chosen. More than 3,400 votes were cast in July on the Lancaster Headliners' Web site, and the talented teens are preparing themselves for the finale show.

The finalists will perform at the live finale 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at American Music Theatre. The finale will include three rounds of competition judged by a three-member panel of music professionals.

The top Headliner will receive a digital résumé package from Mithik Media Group valued at $800; 10 hours of studio time from John's Sound Design Music Studios valued at $600; the opportunity to sing the National Anthem at a Lancaster Barnstormers game; ITS Model and Talent Management Representation; an entertainment seminar from ITS Model and Talent Management and pictures to appear in ITS Model and Talent Management's Talent catalog for a year.

Labor Day barbecues

Being owned and operated by Montgomerians, Chappy's Deli plays an active role in the community.

On Friday, Chappy's is bringing back the Breakfast for Babies fundraiser from 5:30 to 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Perry Hill Road location. During those hours, you can get a hot breakfast that includes eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuit and grits for a contribution of $5 or more. And they'll even bring it to your car so you aren't late for work or school.

What a deal, and what a worthy cause! Last year, the deli served its first Breakfast for Babies and raised more than $8,000 for the March of Dimes.

I've seen the positive impact the March of Dimes has made. The organization is dedicated to preventing birth defects, premature births and infant mortality.
