MEXIDATA . INFO

It seems like every wine region has a few heroes and pioneers who stand out for their contributions, vision and determination. One such "special soul" is Eduardo Liceaga Campos, owner of Via de Liceaga Winery in Guadalupe Valley, Baja California, Mexico.

Eduardo is a shinning star in Mexico's wine industry, and he was one of the founding fathers in the region's early quest for creating high quality premium wines. His dedication in promoting, marketing and educating consumers on behalf of the wine industry in Baja California has been instrumental in encouraging and supporting development of superior wines, and the wine culture in Mexico.

So, it is with great pleasure that I have chosen him to be the focus for a special interview as the 2007 Person of the Year in Guadalupe Valley.

Juvenile offenders offered training

SAN BENITO A charter high school and vocational training program is being expanded to serve 75 or more youthful offenders at a time, using a former branch county tax office as its new home. The Thomas M. Buzbee Career Academy, housed in the Art Goolsby Building, will be the main site for the charter high school program. Academic diplomas will be awarded to graduates, said Tommy Ramirez, chief executive officer of the Darrell B. Hester Cameron County Juvenile Justice Center. A high school equivalency diploma program will be offered for juvenile offenders 16 and older who participate in a variety of vocational training courses, such carpentry and bricklaying, Ramirez said. The program, which will be operated by Gulf Coast Trade Center Inc. of Waverly, Texas, has already been in operation on a very limited basis for four years at the Hester center, Ramirez said.

Aug. 2 — Ideas shape new school

While students of the Sumner School District enjoy their summer break, the Lakeridge Middle School planning committee is hard at work shaping the future of a new facility, with construction to begin as early as 2008.

Voters approved the construction of a new Lakeridge Middle School in May as part of a $114 million capital facilities bond.

The construction budget for the new school is $37 million, with $7.8 million paid for with state matching funds and $29.3 million paid for by district tax payers.

The committee met for the fourth time to discuss the design of the new school on July 26 at the current Lakeridge school.

This team is very excited, said Steve Fulkerson, Lakeridge principal.

They want to plan a school that will be able to support learning well for the next 40 years, he said.
