See "Edward Douglass White: Louisiana's U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice" -- a Louisiana State Museum traveling exhibit that explores the lives of White and his father, Congressman Edward Douglass White through Sept. 9 during library hours at Jefferson Parish East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Ave., Metairie.

Food and arts camp

The Ogden Museum of Southern Art's free food and arts camp for children entering the second, third or fourth grades in Orleans Parish public schools begins today. Participants will learn about good nutrition and how New Orleans' heritage is expressed through food and cooking. They will prepare their lunch each day and, on Fridays, they will use the fun, fanciful napkins, menus and ornaments they have made throughout the week to decorate their lunch tables.

Filippo Pozzato is making the top-form push for the upcoming World Championships. He will form part of Italy's Squadra Azzurra that will seek to defend its 2006 title won by Paolo Bettini. The 25 year-old from Sandrigo (Vicenza) knows that there will be shared leadership but he is "ready to take responsibility."

He is stationed at 1800 metres elevation in Livigno for a training camp that will lead him on to the GP Plouay, the Tour of Poland and then the big day in Stuttgart, the World Championships, September 30.

"It is going very well. I am doing a lot of training to arrive for the Worlds at 100 percent," he confirmed to La Gazzetta dello Sport. "I am very content with my rhythm. The motivation and desire are there; I am very concentrated. ... I started coming here during the junior national training camps.


Movies raked in U.S. summer record

Two years ago, attendance at movie theaters had fallen off so dramatically that people in the film industry were beginning to wonder whether it was the death knell for moviegoing. Fingers began pointing in every direction, looking for blame. Theories on everything from sticky cinema floors to high concession prices to rude moviegoers to films becoming available too soon on DVD were offered up as likely culprits. Many theater operators blamed Hollywood for making a spate of films no one wanted to see.

Last summer, there was a slight uptick in theater attendance. This summer, things have gone even better. Summer box-office receipts have topped $4 billion for the first time in history, up $400 million over last summer.

It was only a few years ago that a $100 million take at the box office was the benchmark for declaring a movie a smash hit.


Sharapova rolls into third round

NEW YORK: Maria Sharapova produced another display of fearsome big hitting to roll into the US Open third round on Thursday, while top American hopes Andy Roddick and James Blake struggled to stay on course.
