Thursday, August 30, 2007

Lewis Edward Braden, 74, of Harrison, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007.

Mr. Braden was a very special man that was loved by so many and he will be truly missed. He was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church and a member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 43.

He is survived by his wife, Clarice Braden; daughters, Debbie (Scott) Hedden, Brenda Campbell, Sherry Forgey, Patricia (Jeff) Armstrong, Robin (Larry) Morrison and Mandy (Michael) Broome; and a son, Steve (Pat) Hamil; brothers are Bill (Saundra) Braden and Carl (Kate) Braden; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, at 11 a.m. in the Highway 58 Chapel with the Rev. Mike Steele officiating.

Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

An outdoor feast for our farmers

Local farmers will take the spotlight Aug. 26 at the third annual "Incredible Feast," where 22 growers team with 22 chefs to make 22 meals.

Chefs will include Scott Staples of Restaurant Zoë, Seth Caswell of Stumbling Goat Bistro and Taichi Kitamura of Chiso. Farmers and fishermen include Kittitas Valley Greenhouse, Fishing Vessel St. Jude, Rent's Due Ranch, Pipitone Farms and Tonnemaker Family Orchard.

The event, which includes live music, country-fair-style games and prizes, is the brainchild of Brasa chef Tamara Murphy and takes place outdoors at the Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N. It aims to raise awareness of local family farms, support local farmers markets and raise money for a disaster-relief fund for area farmers in need.

Tickets are $50 per adult and $10 for children 12 and under.

Michelle Obama to campaign in Reno

Michelle Obama will be campaigning in Reno on Thursday for her husband, Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.

In her first visit to Reno, Michelle Obama is expected to talk briefly about her husband and then spend time mingling with voters.

The event is at 11:30 a.m. at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts on Virginia Street.

"It is really just a meet Michelle event," spokeswoman Katie McCormick Lelyveld said. "She'll talk about her upbringing and her husband's upbringing. She'll really shed light on who he is as a husband and a father and a person."

Michelle Obama is a vice president of community affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

She grew up in Chicago's South Side, before earning degrees at Princeton University and Harvard Law School.

Le Guignol finally has a chance to make its mark

Le Guignol has been around in one form or another since the 1980s, but ask your average restaurant-goer and either he hasn't heard of it or she has never eaten there. Nine years ago, Shane Sutton took over, and almost two years ago, he moved to Las Vegas, where he is now the special events and banquet director at the Palms casino resort.

He left it in good hands. Younger brother Travis Sutton, who started off as a dishwasher, has updated 95 percent of the menu, he estimates. In an effort to expand his clientele he hopes to attract younger eaters "I'm bringing more contemporary style into the menu," he says.

Because right now, it's largely 50-and-older Blaisdell Concert Hall-goers who are in on this little secret. (And now for the disclosure: Sutton's father works for The Advertiser.)

But with the passing of TGIFriday's, the only other restaurant that was within spitting distance of Blaisdell, the restaurant's fortunes are changing.

PARENTS & CHILDREN CALENDAR

See "Edward Douglass White: Louisiana's U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice" -- a Louisiana State Museum traveling exhibit that explores the lives of White and his father, Congressman Edward Douglass White through Sept. 9 during library hours at Jefferson Parish East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Ave., Metairie.

Food and arts camp

The Ogden Museum of Southern Art's free food and arts camp for children entering the second, third or fourth grades in Orleans Parish public schools begins today. Participants will learn about good nutrition and how New Orleans' heritage is expressed through food and cooking. They will prepare their lunch each day and, on Fridays, they will use the fun, fanciful napkins, menus and ornaments they have made throughout the week to decorate their lunch tables.
